The 48-hour rule: subtract, don’t add

A last-minute party succeeds by cutting scope to four pillars: one decorated room, renamed store food, one game, one photo spot. Everything else is optional. Guests invited late expect casual; deliver casual-done-well instead of ambitious-done-poorly.

Hour 0–2: lock the four pillars

• Guest list: text 8–12 people with date, time, address, “costumes encouraged, not required”
• Food: one order-in main (pizza, tacos) + store snacks renamed (see below)

• Photo spot: one wall, one black tablecloth, whatever props you own

Day 1: buy run (single trip)

• Candy for the hunt, ice, drinks
• One bag of fake spider webs and one pack of battery tea lights

Day 2 morning: food + setup

• Rename store food: “mummy dogs” (pigs in blankets), “witch fingers” (breadsticks), “potion punch” (any red drink), “graveyard dip” (any layered dip with cracker tombstones)
• Set up the single decorated room; dim the main lights and rely on string lights + tea lights
• Hide scavenger hunt clues (10–12 spots, 20 minutes to hide)

Day 2, 2 hours before

• Drinks on ice, food out 30 minutes before guests (not earlier — Halloween food dries fast under lights)
• Music or ambient playlist on, costume corner stocked (a box of cheap accessories for the costume-less)
• Trash bag visible, phone charged, host out of the kitchen
