One truck, one pumpkin, zero arguments

Family costume ideas die at two kids’ veto votes. Pumpkins pass because they suit everyone: baby gets a warm onesie, toddler gets pockets, adult gets something that fits over a jacket at 8pm when the wind turns. Patch-of-pumpkins wins my recommendation every year because the only craft is felt faces — everything else is clothes you already own.

Build the pumpkin body

An orange shirt or sweatshirt is the pumpkin. To push it toward pumpkin (and away from “orange shirt”), felt runners sew or glue around the side seams like ribs — four rounded strips cut from slightly darker orange, positioned left and right like the pumpkin’s lobes. This one detail is what photographs as a costume.

Cut the faces

Jack-o’-lantern faces in black felt, each family member choosing their own expression. Cut triangles freehand — lopsided triangles are what make a jack-o’-lantern grin friendly instead of sinister. For babies skip face details on the chest entirely and put the face on a hat instead, where it can’t be chewed.

Patch extras that earn their keep

A green felt leaf and curly wire stem on a headband makes an instant stem hat. Brown paper bag or felt trick-or-treat sacks keep the patch theme running past the door. For the adults, the joke works: mom gets “Tired Pumpkin”, dad gets “Dad Pumpkin” — the face can be literally an argument staged in black felt, which is a family legend by November.

After Halloween

The felt faces peel from cotton with a warm wash; running strips come off with a seam ripper in ten minutes. What’s left is wearable winter clothes, not a box of costume. That’s the entire reason this idea stays in rotation here: Halloween pays for it, autumn keeps it.
