Easy felt trick-or-treat bags kids can help make

The bag is the costume insurance

A paper pumpkin pail dies one block from home. Pillowcases drag ground-level. A structured felt bag holds its shape all night, carries the load, and — the part parents underestimate — it’s the kid’s piece to help make. Three cuts and some glue and a five-year-old has real ownership over their Halloween.

Cut and fold the body

A 12-by-18-inch felt rectangle folded at the bottom, 4 inches up each side glued (or whip-stitched — same night, slower) makes a 9-by-6 inch bag panel. Set the fold low: the top 3 inches becomes the double-thickness cuff where the drawstring lives.

The drawstring channel

Fold the top edge over twice, glue along the strip to form a channel, snip two small slits on each side of the channel. A 30-inch piece of ribbon or grosgrain threads both sides through with a safety pin; knot each end. The double-fold cuff is what separates a treat bag that survives October from one that turns into laundry.

The appliqué face

Jack-o’-lantern, ghost, or cat — black felt triangles and a grin cut freehand, glued on. A ghost reads strongest from the dark side of the street. Let kids choose and place their own face pieces; a crooked grin they placed is worth more than a perfect one I placed.

Delivering the candy load

Reinforce the glue seams with one line of strong tape on the inside bottom after heavy testing — the bottom edge is the only spot that asks for it after a full load. And audit the seams before the big night: a two-minute tug test beats a mid-route repair with felt scraps from someone’s craft supply.

The morning after

Empty the bag, shake the crumbs, hang by the drawstring. Ours have also become show-bag carriers, dress-up props, and — one year — a piñata. Multiple seasons is the real budget win over every plastic pail we’ve bought.
