Line items are the habit that keeps costume math honest. A mermaid tail looks free until you count: felt sheets, scale trim, elastic for the waistband, the headband blank. I add each supply as it lands in the cart, then add our local tax — around here that's seven percent, and it isn't nothing on a four-supply run.

Two habits from my costume seasons: shop the stash first — half a costume usually hides in the felt drawer — and price supplies with per-yard thinking, not per-project optimism. When the total looks higher than expected, that is honest math, not a reason to skip handmade: some years the buy costs less and the costume shelf tests that claim too.
